How can you bring the joy back into sustainable Product Design?
The Founder of Design for Social Change tells us why focussing on your own craft can lead to change
How do you stay positive during a climate crisis as a product designer, working in an industry reliant on production and consumption? In this excerpt from D&AD’s The Future of Product Design talk, hosted at the ad agency Mother in London, Priya Prakash, Founder and CEO of Design for Social Change (d4Sc) tells Jo Banard, D&AD Product Design Jury President and Founder of the design consultancy Morrama that the key is to maintain the joy and beauty in your work.
Prakash, who is also on the D&AD Impact Council, says, “As designers, if we embrace beauty we can change the world. If you create joy in someone’s life, they’ll take notice of the next part, (like) a Tesla car that makes you check your energy. The (attention to) detail (in craft) will create a change in behaviour.”
D&AD Awards 2024 is now open for entries. D&AD’s Product Design category includes the design of consumer and industrial products and prototypes. The climate and ecological impact of the design is also considered in this category. Learn more about and enter the Product Design category here.
