How you can be an ally when working in countries with indigenous populations
The Chief Creative Officer of RUN asks: “Are you ok with a homogenous industry?”
Manaakitanga is a Māori term for treating each other with respect, generosity and hospitality. For Raymond Otene McKay, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of RUN, it's a concept that should underpin the ways in which the creative industries work.
New Zealand, or Aotearoa, is often seen as a world leader in how brands and agencies work with indigenous communities. Here, McKay outlines the correct way to establish and strengthen these relationships, emphasising the importance of keeping an open mind and heart, avoiding assumptions and showing respect. A key part of being an ally, he argues, is being brave in making mistakes, in asking questions where you need to and in knowing when to seek help. This talk also highlights the value of land acknowledgements when working in countries with indigenous populations, as well as how to open the industry to more Māori creatives.
